Why do people insist on having unique names for babies?

Why would someone name their child Pheonix or Trixibelle, or after a state in the US? Its like naming your child Worcestershire or Birmingham.

Why do people insist on having unique names for babies?
well some people like thier kids to have unique names
Reply:The only state name I like is Indiana.....There are some good unique names.
Reply:To try to be different and not go along with the crowd and pick the common name.
Reply:I wanted to name my baby girl Scarlett Rain but I never did due to the fact that my husband hated the name. I think some unique names are nice. It makes a person feel happy to be the only one with that name and they can make it all their own.
Reply:Phoenix and Trixibelle are awesome names, I would much rather be called one of those than Sharon or Tracey [no offence]. I think they sound fun and glamorous. I've actually noticed a lot of kids with UK place names like London, Chester and Preston. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. I think they're great. It's all just down to personal taste. :-)
Reply:Because they don't want to be Jennifer number 4 in a class. I teach and I see so many kids with all the same names and they end up with unique nicknames, being called by thier last names, or being Emily K or something... I love that my name isn't the same as everyone elses.
Reply:My daughter is Daisy Georgia! I'm british and enjoyed a great holiday in the States and fell in love with this state; hence the name. We nearly called her Savannah Georgia, but didn't think it was fair to give her an address as a name!

There's a place near me called Kimberley, in Nottinghamshire, and so why couldn't I call a kid Kimberley Notts?

But these are just words, and don't forget that many place names come from peoples names. So, which is the right way around?
Reply:It's desire to be noticed...some parents are so carried away by celebrity status that the closest they can get is to give thier kids ridiculous names.By the way I am from Birmingham and would never dream of calling my child Brummie..The accent is hard enough to live with!!
Reply:So that they will be remembered..
Reply:theres nothing wrong with unusual. but i do think people who give their kids totally made up names are just cursing them to a childhood of ridicule. i wish people would think about what they are doing before calling their poor child something like Merlot (i actually heard a mother call her son that in a supermarket one day, i thought i had missheard til she said it again! lets hope he doesnt grow up to be an alcaholic.) i really believe a name should have a meaning, a name is for life not just for christmas.

having said that some names that are meant to be something else like a state of a country can be nice. i like the name India for a girl. and i have a friend called Valentine, it really suits him, of course he is called Val most of the time.
Reply:They're messed up mentally, and want their kids to be tortured, teased and harassed all of their lives? They think it's cool? They have no inkling of what it will to the poor kid growing up? My friends wacko daughter named her little boy a normal name, but named her ugly daughter a boys name....now the poor kid will be teased doubly....All I can say is that I feel for these poor children.
Reply:I hope my children, Dakota, Utah and Alabama don't read this. They'll be mortified.
Reply:I for one believe there are way to many John Smith's and Erica Johnson's. Everyone wants to think their child is the greatest thing since slice toast and thus we try to find an extraordinary name.
Reply:I'm calling my next child Grimsby.
Reply:I think it's sad, really - imagine thinking that your child will only be unique if you give them a bizarre name :(
Reply:I think some parents grew up as one of three Jennifers or four Davids or what have you. They want their kids to stand out.

Others had family names that they felt were uncool, and what their kids to have something that sounds current.

But I agree it can be taken too far. It's one thing to choose a name that is familiar, but underused, and another thing to make up an eye-ball straining mess of a name and then tell us all that it means "beautiful princess."

So, by all means, revive great old names like India, Anneliese, Evangline, Sarai or Gideon and Silas. And I rather like some of the more adventurous names that are familiar words, just not traditionally used as names - Avalon, Journey, Vrai. But I could do without the Savannahs, Kaelees, Traytons, Caidenns and Kylins.
Reply:Because unique name=unique child.

People don't understand that a kids name has little to nothing to do with how they turn out in life, with the exception that they might not ever get an interview for a good job with a jacked up name.

My favorite "location name" is Brooklyn. Clearly, none of the people naming their child this have ever actually set foot in Brooklyn. I always suggest Bronx or Staten Island as an alternative, and I get many thumbs down for it!
Reply:some ppl want there kids 2 be unique coc face hahahahhaha

Reply:Because parents with 3 braincells (and that's being generous) like the Beckhams think it's cool to name your kid after where they were conceived (Brooklyn) or something unique which will make them stand out (not in a good way) at school.
Reply:I've been wondering this for a long time.

What's wrong with Tom, Dick or Harry?!?

These parents bless their kids with names like Shaniqua, Liquequa or something that sounds like a tropical fruit. Instead of investing the time to tell their kids that its their action that will make them special and not a name that parents want to flaunt at parties.

Its like people driving expensive cars that puts them close to bankruptcy.
Reply:What's wrong with thinking outside the box?

Isn't that what makes us individuals?

If we were all named Tom, Harry, John or Betty, Mary or Sue then where would the distinction be?
Reply:i feel sorry for the poor kids
Reply:yeh some 'unique' names are ok. i really like Harlow and Diego (for a boy) but stuff like Apple and Princess is just too far. celebs rkn naming their kids is such a competition; they have to beat the others by picking a weirder name. its crazy but thats Hollywood for you!
Reply:Because they want their kids to have a different name. Its not like Jessica or anything. I dont know for some people unique is appealing. Although I agree some of the newer "unique" names are comical.
Reply:Just to be different I guess.
Reply:Cos they think they're babies better and different to all the others when in fact it's just going to grow up the same as everyone elses.
Reply:I suppose you would like everybody to name their children your favourite names? What are they? Sharon and John?
Reply:yet who knows a young toddler or baby called rupert or edwina
Reply:hey---my name is summer salt watson
Reply:Some might think that it's cool to have their kids named uniquely because usually the names will have the kids stand out from the crowd because of that.

It's so call the 'trend' right now.

I have a friend who name herself a fruit like mango, or even jewellerie.

Well, different people have different thoughts.
Reply:b/c they dont want o be the same old, jessica, or chris.... those names are boring
