Do you think there should be certain restrictions of what names babies can be given?

Do you think there should be some sort of rules/laws/restrictions on names that babies can be given or do you think it is entirely the parents choice?

Do you think there should be certain restrictions of what names babies can be given?
I just think people should have common sense.

Does the government really have to tell you that McHamburglynn is not a suitable name for your daughter or can't you figure that out on your own?
Reply:I think it should be entirely up to the parent! With that being said, the only exception I would make to that be naming the child something offensive (something dirty, a cuss, etc.). While some parents don't always make the smartest choices when naming their kids, or some outrageous names may unfortunately lead their kid to being picked on... there are always nicknames. And if it's that horrible there is always the option available to the child to change their name when they're older!

If restrictions were made on unique names, how boring would that be?
Reply:I don't think anything profane should be given to a child. Also, things like "Ima Pigg" and "Ura Pigg" should be outlawed! What parent would do that to their child???? Numbers (like "4real") shouldn't be used either, in my opinion. Otherwise, I don't think there's anything wrong. I know there's a lot of crazy names the stars are giving their children, but nothing I think should be outlawed.
Reply:One woman went to court because the hospital wouldn't allow her to name her son 4-real. They said because 4 isn't a letter. I don't know the outcome of the case, but still. Yes, certain names should be banned. Parents can do unique names, but 40 year old "Princess" running around or yelling 4-real, come here! isn't a cool thing to do to your kid.
Reply:There are unwritten rules, and norms, just tacky people who choose not to follow them.

In addition to hideous names, there are names that don't work together and are a joke: Jill Hill or Tallulah does the Hula

Then you have tacky family members who call 'dibs' on your child's name whose already here! And then have the nerve to be upset with you about it. We've had this happen.

My son JoeL was born 7 months before my husband's first cousin Joe had his first boy. We picked the name first and named him first. They decided to name their son after dad but didn't want to give him Joe, Joey, or Joseph. They actually came to us 3 days before our JoeL was born asking us to change it because it would be perfect for their child. I said no, pick Jonah, pick Josiah but we aren't changing it.

These same cousins actually Joe's parents bit off my DH's parents name last generation when my in laws named their daughter Kristy, 4 months later they picked Chrissy.
Reply:Yesterday I would have answered NO, you name your babies whatever you want. But after hearing about a couples carefully picked names (Anus and Adolf Hitler), I think I've changed my mind.

You should know whats going too far, but it is your baby!
Reply:I don't think there should be restrictions but I would think people would use their brains more than they do. People don't seem to understand that children have to live with these name, sure I understand you don't want 10 Kayden's in a class room but I don't think you should name your child "tree" or something ridiculous like that.
Reply:i think that it should be up to the parents-i just wish that every parent would actually think about what they are naming their child. like the guy whose kids are all named after nazis (adolf hitler, one's middle name was aryan nation) that's just sad. those kids have to live with that until they are old enough to change it if they want to. parents just need to use common sense
Reply:Of course there should!!!

1) no infamous historical figures that have caused harm to the world. (i.e. adolf hitler, joseph stalin, osama bin laden, etc.)

2) a limit of five names total. Minimum of two. One first and one last name with the possibility of three middle names. Although it is not a requirement. Too many middle names is just plain annoying!

I'm sure there are plenty of other ones!
Reply:Yes. Some people are freaking crazy and name their kids horrible names like violence! thats not even the worst of it.

honestly even tho its the parents decision the kid has to live with it/the humiliation its name brings.
Reply:definitely not!

it is the parents choice and they should be able to name the child whatever they want to

if they carried the baby they get the right to anem it whatever tehy want to
Reply:There are laws in some countries, that prohibit names that are sexually orientated, eg Sex Fruit !! I think if needs be, there should be some sort restrictions if it saves a child's dignity.....but only in extrem cases. It's the parents choice at the end of the day, and naming a child is special, no matter what the name is.
Reply:I agree with Mike's answer. Parents can name their children whatever crazy thing they want - but those kids should be allowed to change their name for free, or a very minimal filing fee at the court, once they are adults.
Reply:I think that they just shouldn't be allowed to name a kid something that's offensive. Other than that, it should really be their choice.
Reply:no.

it's the parents choice.

personally i would be really offended if someone told me i couldn't give my kid a certain name.
Reply:I think there definitely should be restrictions. Some of the names people give their kids these days is almost child abuse.
Reply:Yes, because some terrible names would give the children a hard time at school.
Reply:It should be totally up to the parents. We have too much government as it is!
Reply:No, but I think every child should be allowed to change their name for free once they reach adulthood.
Reply:I think there should be laws to protect the child. Look at the weirdo's who named their child Adolf Hitler....retards!!
Reply:Nope i hear on the New some named they kid Hitler and the other kids names like that Crazy nuts but that they right
Reply:parents choice.
Reply:NO

AFTER ALL LOOK AT YOUR NAME
Reply:yes i do i would never name a kid Clifford
