When did Americans become with the idea of naming their babies with two names?

Used to hear how Americans loved to named their babies by one name only. After seeing long, strange names, I think it will not be funny anymore鈥s this something new within the culture...

When did Americans become with the idea of naming their babies with two names?
Probably about the same time most of Europe thought it was a fun tradition. And you know us Americans....anything to keep up with fashionable society.
Reply:I was born and raised in Europe and in my native country, everyone has a middle name but that middle name isn't anything like the middle names here in the U.S. Instead, every person's middle name is a derivative of his/her father's first (proper) name and, in essence, everyone's middle name means "daughter of.." or "son of...".
Reply:It is the first and middle names, which people have always had, its just now some people call their children by both.
Reply:I've noticed a lot of people giving their children two middle names lately
Reply:Middle names are nothing new and they're certainly not just an American tradition.
