Why do people give their babies comman names?

why would you want your kid to have a name that a million other people have? why not be original?

Why do people give their babies comman names?
define original

creating a name by combining 2 different names

Mike and Suzy would be Mizy?

Misspelling a name so that the person will ALWAYS have to spell it for others

Michelle becomes Meeshyle

Or spelling a common word backwards

Heaven = Nevaeh

Or maybe just using some random noun

Apple, Pilot

Or maybe you want to have K-8?

----------

Truthfully, your child will not be a child for their whole life - Names need to be able to grow with the child. Why put a name like "Talula Does the Hula from Hawaii" on a child?

----------

UPDATE:

I just think it awful for parents to name their kids something crazy, just so the parents can prove how creative and different they are - If you want to show how creative you can be, write a poem/story/song or do some sort of artwork. If you want your children to be creative, expose him/her to various creative outlets (music, stories, gymnastics or dance, art, etc.) - Your child will be just as creative as TweedleDee if you take the time to expose them to creative outlets... And remember, not every child will express their creativity in the same way - it is up to the parent to help the child find their way of being creative!

Different names like Malachi (which ranked 155 in 2007, and frequently lower or not even in the ranking!) are fine. Different names like Thats My Baby are almost equal to child abuse IMHO!
Reply:I agree. Most people, though, are afraid of their kid getting teased. There's also a difference between original and way out there. I have a bunch of names I love that most would not consider normal. Orli, Stavros, Tavi, and Onyx are examples. I'm glad I don't have a common name and others I know who have uncommon names are grateful as well.
Reply:People who TYPICALLY(not always) give their children common names with uncommon spellings have a low education level.

Also, why would you want to give your child a name that he/she is going to have to pronounce for everyone, usually more than once per person? I think it would be just as frustrating to have a name that no one knows what it is as it would be to have the same name as another in my class. There are so many messed up last names; why confuse people with a difficult first?
Reply:I guess some people just don't want their kids to get bullied and picked on because of their names. It is already hard enough to get through life as a child at school without the added complication of an uncommon name. It will be mispelt and mocked which wouldn't happen to a child with a common name. The only reason why people with common names don't get teased is because there are 5 other people in the same area with that name so it is considered "Normal". In a few years time names like Apple and Jesus will just be another one of those normal names.
Reply:They've been tried and tested....and if you find a really common name that you think is absolutely perfect, I think it's better to go with it than to try to be "original" for the sake of being different
Reply:like Wednesday original?

and like Addison common.

sorry to anyone with the name Addison i just feel that it is a bit overused at the moment.
Reply:I am not sure why you feel so strongly that you need to post a question about it.

And besides, we all have a different opinion of what is and what isn't common.

Reply:names have trends, as well as the timeless classics. people are influenced by popular names of the time and may name a child after someone they know.
Reply:Common names are usually the nice ones. So what if 1000 other kids have that name they each have different personalities.
Reply:What do you see as being original or normal or bizarre?
Reply:They don't want their kids to get picked on but what people don't realize is that everyone gets picked on!
Reply:Probably because they don't want their kids to go through life being made fun of.
Reply:yeah I dont get it..Id make up the names of my children or use really unusual ones.
Reply:people will pronounce it better

Reply:because kids get annoyed when people can't say there names right...i should kno
Reply:because i wouldnt want to give my child some trendy name that will eventually sound like sh it on a 50-year-old
